Katt Williams Buys Military Base to Build a Comedy Film Empire in Alabama
Katt Williams' Bold Move into Filmmaking
Comedy legend Katt Williams is making major waves in the entertainment industry with his latest venture. During a recent interview on This Past Weekend with Theo Von, Williams revealed that he purchased a former military base in Alabama for $1.5 million with plans to turn it into a film studio. His goal? To create a thriving hub for Black-centric filmmaking, independent comedy movies, and fresh entertainment.
From Fort McClellan to Hollywood South
The property in question, Fort McClellan, sits in East Central Alabama and spans over 3 million square feet of indoor space across 30 buildings. Williams compared his vision to what Tyler Perry accomplished in Atlanta, where Perry turned the former Fort McPherson into a massive movie studio now worth an estimated $280 million. However, unlike Perry, Williams is determined to build his studio without outside help, stating, "We can do this... I just needed a home where great movies and entertainment product could be made without the shenanigans of Hollywood."
Hollywood Abandoning Comedy Opens New Doors
Williams' announcement comes at a time when many comedians feel Hollywood has turned its back on comedy filmmaking. Over the last decade, classic-style comedies like Step Brothers and Superbad have been replaced with endless superhero blockbusters. The result? A market desperate for fresh, funny content.
This shift has led many comedians to take matters into their own hands. From Shane Gillis funding Tires to Stavros Halkias making independent films, the industry is seeing a rise in self-produced projects. Williams' studio is set to take this movement to the next level, providing a large-scale platform for comedy films outside of Hollywood's traditional system.
Katt’s Approach: Quality Over Quantity
Williams made it clear that while he owns the studio, he won’t be directly involved in every single project. Instead, he sees himself as a gatekeeper, ensuring that only top-tier comedy makes it through. "My job is just to make sure all of the food that we sell in this grocery store belongs in this grocery store," he explained, emphasizing that quality and humor would be the studio’s main priorities.
A Possible Theo Von Collaboration?
Throughout the interview, Williams repeatedly praised Theo Von as one of the best entertainers today. Given his admiration for Von’s comedic storytelling, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them collaborate on a future project.
This comes at an interesting time, as Theo Von and David Spade are currently developing an independent comedy film about two busboys from Arizona. Like Williams, they’re choosing to bypass the traditional Hollywood system, opting instead for creative freedom over corporate oversight.
The Future of Independent Comedy Films
Williams’ Alabama studio could mark a major turning point for comedy filmmaking. If successful, it might inspire other comedians to follow suit, further decentralizing the industry.
Even without millions to spend on a military base, many comedians are already proving that independent content can thrive. With the rise of self-produced stand-up specials, sketches, and podcasts, comedy fans are getting more direct access to their favorite entertainers than ever before.
